Family STEAM Day
Bring your family to join ours every Saturday at the STEAM Discovery Center. Each week will feature STEAM oriented hands-on science experiments that are fun for the whole family. Kids can attend with or without family members. Adult family members attend for FREE!
“Robots from Scratch”
Students and their family members will solve problems by designing and coding their own robots using the LEGO Mindstorm EV3 robotics kits. After an introduction to the technology behind real world automation, the class will break into groups to build the drive base necessary to program a robot using block coding.
Students and their family members will learn the different touch sensor options they can choose to attach to the drive base. The class will be challenged to make their robots move until it hits something, then turn around automatically.
Students and their family members will attach a drive arm that can perform any number of tasks. After exploring the options, teams will challenge each other to a fun math game that involves dice and graphing.
Students and their family members will learn the engineering techniques required to wire the color sensors in the drive base that operates the robots. After wiring the necessary sensors to follow single colored paths, teams will program their robots to follow the colored path they set while ignoring other teams’ colors. The teams will then race through mazes and obstacles using their program.
“The Robot Relay”
Students will program the robots to be remote controlled, via a joystick, to drive in any number of directions. Teams will then face off in a series of obstacle course mazes of increasing difficulty relay-style.
