Fueling Marvelous Mammals

Have you ever wondered what exactly is going on when mammals, like humans, eat or breathe? Explore the biological sciences behind how mammals generate and expend energy in this 5-week biology course series. Students will test for the number of calories in different foods, discover how our nutrients are transported throughout the body, learn about the anatomy of many marvelous mammals and more.

Students will test for the number of calories in different foods, discover how our nutrients are transported throughout the body, learn about the anatomy of many marvelous mammals and more.


Week 1

“Food As Energy”

We’ve all heard of calories, but do we know exactly what they are? This nutrition driven biology course will dive into food in a way that students could never have imagined.


Week 2

“Digestion Lab”

Join as we take a journey through the human digestive system to find out where our grub goes! Students will complete a hands-on simulation to learn about the brilliant bits of our bodies in our messiest lab yet!


Week 3

“Jell-O Osmosis”

Have fun playing with Jell-O while learning about cellular diffusion. Students will participate in a hands-on cell model dissection showing the properties of osmosis and how it helps our body function.


Week 4

“Lung and Organ Function”

This week’s course will highlight organs and their functions inside our bodies. Students will become more aware of the parts of their body and how they can train them to help achieve their goals. We will demonstrate the success that comes with practice by challenging everyone to increase their lung capacity in just 1 hour.


Week 5

“Moving and Grooving”

Spend the day outside moving with LabRats! Students will participate in a series of outdoor challenges that highlight the science behind our movements and how muscles aren’t the only things that give us strength.
